About this game
Turbo OutRun (ターボアウトラン) is an arcade racing game developed by Sega AM2 and released February 1989, serving as the direct sequel to the 1986 classic OutRun. It runs on the OutRun arcade hardware and was sold both as dedicated cabinets and upgrade kits for original OutRun machines. Players drive a Ferrari F40 with a female passenger, racing coast-to-coast across the United States from New York to Los Angeles through 16 sequential stages. Unlike the branching route design of the original OutRun, this sequel uses a single linear highway path. The signature new turbo boost button delivers sudden acceleration but heats the engine; overuse triggers overheating and temporarily disables boost. You race against the countdown timer and an AI rival driving a Porsche 959, while evading police vehicles. After every four stages, a shop menu lets players upgrade engine, turbo and tires. Soundtrack composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi and Yasuhiro Takagi. Later ported to Mega Drive, DOS, Commodore 64 and Amiga. The arcade ROM can be played with MAME emulator, a landmark late 80s Sega arcade racer.

Controls
These are the default keys. Every arcade board has a different number of buttons and means different things by them. The rows above are buttons 1–6 on the board: on Neo Geo boards (The King of Fighters and friends) A/B/C/D are buttons 1–4, Metal Slug uses only 1, 2 and 4 (shoot / jump / grenade), and Pac-Man uses none at all. Six-button fighters with three punches and three kicks (Street Fighter II and the like) get a different layout from the core: light punch U, medium punch I, heavy punch Q, light kick J, medium kick K, heavy kick E. Click the gamepad icon 🎮 in the player toolbar, then “Remap keys” to open the emulator’s own control settings (keyboard and gamepad, saved automatically). Gamepads are detected automatically. On phones you get on-screen buttons.
