About this game
Quake is a groundbreaking dark fantasy first-person shooter developed by id Software and released in 1996, with its engine programmed by John Carmack. Players take on the role of Ranger, travelling across four interdimensional realms including abandoned military bases, medieval castles, lava dungeons and gothic cathedrals. The goal is to gather four magic runes and defeat an ancient evil that endangers humanity. The arsenal includes axe, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher and lightning gun, to fight corrupted knights, ogres and other twisted monsters. It uses a true fully 3D polygon engine, different from Doom’s 2.5D sprite rendering. It popularized the modern WASD + mouselook control scheme. GLQuake demonstrated the power of the 3DFX Voodoo graphics card and accelerated the rise of consumer 3D accelerators. The dark atmospheric soundtrack was created by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. It features built-in multiplayer deathmatch over LAN. The open engine sparked countless mods, including Team Fortress, which later became a standalone franchise. Strafe jumping and fast movement mechanics laid the foundation for arena shooters.
