Mario Bros.

Mario Bros. is a single-screen platform action game developed by Nintendo. It first released in arcades in 1983 and ported to Famicom / NES the same year. This title marks Luigi’s debut appearance. Mario and Luigi work as plumbers exploring New York sewers to defeat creatures pouring out of pipes. Core gameplay: hit the platform under enemies to flip them onto their backs, then kick them away. You cannot kill enemies by jumping directly on them while they stand upright. Enemies include Shellcreeper turtles, Sidestepper crabs, jumping Fighter Flies and Slipice that freeze platforms. Fireballs also roam the stage. The central POW block flips all grounded enemies once hit. It supports simultaneous 2-player mode; players can cooperate or sabotage each other. Stages loop with rising difficulty and bonus coin rounds. It established Mario’s plumber identity and introduced pipes to the franchise. It is different from the later 1985 Super Mario Bros, and regarded as an iconic early 2-player Famicom game.

The NES was always two-player — 2P uses the numeric keypad, and NumLock does not matter. No numpad? Rebind 2P to other keys in the 🎮 panel.
