Donkey Kong Land
About this game
Donkey Kong Land (released in Japan as Super Donkey Kong GB) is an original side-scrolling platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for Game Boy in 1995. It is not a direct port of the SNES Donkey Kong Country, but a brand-new game. Cranky Kong sets up a challenge, King K. Rool steals Donkey Kong’s banana hoard again. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong embark on the adventure to take back their bananas. It uses compressed pre-rendered sprites, bringing visuals similar to the SNES original onto the monochrome Game Boy. It supports Super Game Boy for colour palette on SNES console. Players swap between Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong; only one kong appears on screen at once. It retains rolling jumps, stomping and barrel throwing. There are four worlds with total 30 levels, featuring jungles, pirate ships, underwater zones and ancient ruins, plus a boss fight at the end of each world. Hidden bonus rooms exist in stages. Completing all bonus rooms marks the level with an exclamation mark. Barrel bombs can blast boulders open for secret shortcuts. Collect 100 bananas for an extra life. Soundtrack is composed by David Wise and Graeme Norgate, tailored for Game Boy’s 4-channel audio chip. It is one of the most iconic platform games on Game Boy.
