Adventure Island

Adventure Island (Japanese: Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima). Developed and published by Hudson Soft, it launched on Famicom in 1986. Adapted from the arcade Wonder Boy, it rebranded the main character and became an iconic side-scrolling platformer for the Famicom. The evil witch doctor kidnaps Tina, the protagonist’s girlfriend. Takahashi Meijin (named Master Higgins in Western releases) journeys across tropical islands, jungles, caves, glaciers and shorelines to defeat monsters and rescue her. The signature stamina system drains continuously; players must gather fruits and milk to stay alive. Breaking open mystery eggs grants powerups such as stone axes, skateboards and invincibility sprites, though some eggs contain harmful demons as traps. There are 8 worlds, each containing 4 stages, ending with a boss fight. Touching enemies, falling into pits, drowning or getting hit by rolling boulders instantly kills the player. It has dense traps and demands pattern memorization. Secret clouds can be hit to unlock the bonus “Heaven World” stage for high scores. Widely included on Subor multicarts in China, with catchy background music and punishing difficulty, it remains one of the most beloved classic Famicom games for retro gamers born in the 80s and 90s.
