Double Dragon II: The Revenge

Double Dragon II: The Revenge is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Technōs Japan. The arcade original released in 1988, and the Famicom port launched in 1989. It is one of the most iconic brawlers on the Famicom. It is not a simple port; it was redesigned specifically for home console hardware. Set in post-apocalyptic New York, the Shadow Warriors kill Billy’s girlfriend Marian. Billy and his twin brother Jimmy embark on a quest for revenge and march toward the enemy’s secret base. Its biggest upgrade is simultaneous two-player co-op. It also adds a special versus mode where the two players can fight each other. The leveling-up system from the first game is removed. Special moves are activated via button inputs directly. It introduced the series’ famous signature techniques: cyclone kick, flying knee strike and uppercut, which deal high damage with solid hitboxes. Players can pick up weapons such as whips, dynamite and batons. Enemies include ninjas, club-wielding brutes and knife throwers with smarter AI than the previous entry. There are nine stages spanning city streets, docks, forests, helicopter cabins and underwater bases. The final boss is the phantom samurai with long-range wave attacks. Three difficulty settings are available: easy, normal and hard. It features impressive pixel art and a powerful soundtrack. Widely distributed on Subor multicarts in China, its two-player co-op experience left fond childhood memories for many retro gamers.
