Street Fighter III: The New Generation

Street Fighter III: The New Generation is a 2D arcade fighting game developed and published by Capcom in 1997. It is the first entry of the Street Fighter III series, running on the CP System III arcade board. The subtitle "The New Generation" stands for a massive character roster overhaul. Only Ryu and Ken returned from earlier games, while all other fighters are brand new. Alex serves as the main protagonist. Playable roster includes Ibuki, Dudley, Elena, Yun, Yang, Sean, Necro and Oro. Gill, who controls fire and ice powers, acts as the final boss. The landmark addition is the Parry system. By tapping forward or down at the exact moment an opponent’s attack lands, players can negate all damage and open a counterattack window, greatly raising the skill ceiling and strategic depth of matches. It also introduced the Super Arts system, letting players pick one super move out of three at the start of each fight. Other mechanics include stun gauge, Target Combos and enhanced EX special moves. Powered by CPS3 hardware, every character has hand-drawn high-frame sprite animations, regarded as one of the peak visuals of 2D pixel fighting games. As the foundation of the Street Fighter III trilogy, it received two major follow-up updates: 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike. Compared with later revisions, The New Generation has some character balance issues, yet it built the core gameplay framework for the whole SF3 series, making it a milestone title in competitive 2D fighting game history.
