Romance of the Three Kingdoms V

Romance of the Three Kingdoms V is a turn-based historical simulation SLG developed by Koei, first released for PC-98 in 1995, later ported to DOS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PSP. Many retro players regard it as the peak entry in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise. Players take on roles of warlords of the Three Kingdoms era to govern cities, recruit officers and conquer lands for unification. The core new mechanic is the **Reputation system**, which controls available commands, recruitment chance, public sentiment and diplomacy. Battles feature 12 tactical formations including Fishscale and Crane Wing, each with unique attack, defense and mobility traits across plains, mountains and water. Every officer possesses unique skills, plus supernatural spells and illusions. Officer duels are greatly enhanced. Gold and grain are managed globally instead of city-by-city, removing tedious resource transport. Multiple officers can execute domestic assignments in parallel. It includes seven historical scenarios spanning Yellow Turban Rebellion to the death of Zhuge Liang. Custom ruler creation is available and supports up to 8 players hotseat mode. Its orchestral CD-quality soundtrack composed by Takayuki Hattori is highly celebrated, and some tracks were widely used in Hong Kong TV dramas. The Power-Up Kit adds extra scenarios and events. It is one of the most beloved retro Three Kingdoms strategy games for DOS.
